MISSION STATEMENT

The Richard S. Reynolds, Jr. Comparative Orthopedic Research Laboratory (CORL) at New Bolton Center is dedicated to comparative orthopedic research with an emphasis on the horse. The laboratory is set up to study a wide range of areas that lend themselves to evaluation by mechanical testing, calcified tissue histology, or microscopic and/or macroscopic image analysis. Major topics of research programs relate to fracture healing, bone modeling and remodeling, implant design, development of orthopedic devices and bone implants.

The laboratory provides a research environment for undergraduate and veterinary students as well as residents, graduate students and post docs. The close affiliation with the Department of Orthopedics in the School of Medicine continues the concept of one medicine and provides integration into the comparative philosophy of the laboratory. The laboratory Logo of Chessica and Chiron denotes the inquisitive nature of exploring structure and function in the animal kingdom in search of solutions to orthopedic problems of all animal species including man.

The CORL was begun in 1981 using borrowed space within the C.Mahlon Kline building on the New Bolton Center Campus. The present facilities were dedicated in June of 1998 and can be seen in the virtual tour of the facilities.
